Following his surprising axing
from the national side for the limited-overs series against Sri Lanka,
Glenn Maxwell was included in the 15-member Australia A squad on
Wednesday (August 3). The team will take on India A, South Africa A,
Cricket Australia's National Performance Squad, and will be led by Chris
Lynn.
Rod Marsh, the chief selector, felt the quadrangular
series was a perfect platform for fringe players to push for their
selection. "Seven of the 15 players in the squad have been selected in
varying formats for Australia, showing that this series can only add to
their prospects of pushing for further selection," he said. "Although we
have also selected a squad with an eye towards the future, we have also
rewarded the most recent domestic cricket performers and this is a
perfect opportunity to showcase their talents against international
opposition."
Maxwell has been included in the squad in place
of Jon Holland, who left to join the Australian team in Sri Lanka for
the three-match Test series after Steve O'Keefe was ruled out with a
hamstring injury.
The series presents Cameron Bancroft, Scott
Boland, Cameron Boyce, Kane Richardson and Marcus Stoinis, who have all
represented Australia at the highest level, a chance to prove their
mettle and win their place back.
Peter Handscomb, who lead
Australia A to a 197-run win over South Africa A in a four-day game, has
also been included in the squad. Marsh felt he'll play a key role in
the upcoming series. "Peter led wonderfully in Australia A's victory
over South Africa A at Allan Border Field in the longer format and will
benefit from having a leadership role in the one-day matches, he shapes
as one of this country's best up-and-coming leaders on the field," he
said.
The tournament begins on August 13, with Australia A kick-starting their campaign against India A on August 14.
