Nathan Coulter-Nile, Australian paceman, will head home from Sri Lanka after suffering a back injury.
Originally
seen as a surprise inclusion in Australia's squad for Sri Lanka, the
28-year- old has not played an international match on tour and joins
captain Steve Smith in withdrawing from the five-match One-day
international series. Smith revealed he was heading home to rest and
recuperate after Australia lost the second ODI by 82 runs on Wednesday
(August 24).
Coulter-Nile, who has played 16 ODIs and 17 T20Is,
has had numerous injury problems throughout his career. David Beakley,
Australian physiotherapist, said Coulter-Nile would be examined in
Perth.
"Nathan had been experiencing a gradual increase in lower
back pain which is now preventing him from bowling at match intensity,"
he said. "He will now return to Perth for further investigation which
will determine the extent of the injury and possible return to play
timelines."
Coulter-Nile, a bustling quick, had a horror injury
run last year, having suffered a calf strain on Australia's
limited-overs tour of England in September and a shoulder injury in the
Matador BBQs One-Day Cup a month later.
He missed the bulk of the
Australian summer after dislocating his shoulder during a Big Bash
League match in December. Coulter-Nile was a surprise inclusion in
Australia's Twenty20 World Cup team earlier this year but claimed just
one wicket in four matches during the team's failed campaign.
The
Australian selectors have opted not to replace Coulter-Nile for the
remaining three ODIs, with quicks Scott Boland and John Hastings already
with the touring party as early arrivals for the two T20Is next month.
The
selectors have also recalled all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, Chris Lynn and
wicketkeeper Peter Nevill for the two T20s. Maxwell was earlier dropped
for the ODI series after a string of low scores.
"Both Chris and
Glenn are dynamic players who are both capable of winning a game from
their own bat and they also bring that x-factor in the field," National
Selector Rod Marsh said. "Peter is the incumbent wicket-keeper in the
T20 side and had a very good World T20 for Australia, the panel wanted
to keep that consistency heading into these two matches.
David Warner will continue to lead the side in the absence of Smith.
T20I squad:
David Warner (C), Scott Boland, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, John
Hastings, Travis Head, Moises Henriques, Chris Lynn, Shaun Marsh, Glenn
Maxwell, Peter Nevill, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa
