West Indies, who are placed third in the latest Twenty20
International (T20I) rankings for teams released by the International
Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday (August 25), have a chance to topple
India from the second position, when the two teams lock horns in a
two-match T20I series in Florida, commencing on August 27.
The
ICC World T20 2016 champions are placed third with 122 points, six
behind India and ten adrift of New Zealand. A 2-0 series win against the
Asian side will take them to second place with 127 points, while India
will drop to third with 124 points.
However, the
scenario changes drastically if the margin of victory is reversed. If
India win the series 2-0, then they will equal New Zealand on 132
points, but will remain second when it is calculated beyond the decimal
point. On the other hand, a series defeat for West Indies will see them
slip to fourth below South Africa, who currently have 119 points.
Coming
to the individual rankings, Virat Kohli is perched at the No.1 slot in
the standings for the batsmen, while Samuel Badree is the top-ranked
bowler. With both men in action in the upcoming T20I series, it is only
fair to expect them to consolidate their respective positions further.
There
is no other Indian batsman in the top 10 of ICC's rankings, while a
good series for Chris Gayle (8th) will help the Jamaican leapfrog a few
players. Jasprit Bumrah is the highest ranked Indian bowler with 740
points and is ranked second.
Marlon Samuels is
the only player from both sides to feature in the all-rounders list. The
Jamaican is ranked No.5, and a good outing against India will enable
him to move up in the rankings.
