Marcus Trescothick, former England opener, penned a one-year contract
on Sunday (August 28) with Somerset, and will play his 25th season for
the County next year. The veteran opener is on the verge of compiling
25,000 first-class runs. He also has 49 centuries for Somerset, which is
the joint most for his county.
"I have made no secret of my
desire to carry on playing for Somerset for as long as I can,"
Trescothick noted. "I'm really enjoying my cricket at the moment and I
still have the hunger to succeed. I am delighted that I will be a part
of this club for another year.
"It's a really exciting time
for the County at the moment with the talent that we have coming through
and I can't wait to see what happens in the next 12 months."
Trescothick
is perched at the top of the batting chart for Somerset in Division 1
this season, with 978 runs to his name. The aggressive opener, who made
his County debut back in 1993, showed his mettle the following year when
he amassed 924 runs at an average of 48.63 in the English domestic
scene. During that year, he also shone brightly for England Under-19 in
youth Tests against India Under-19 by composing 467 runs at an
impressive average of 77.83.
The former Somerset captain
successfully made the transition from County cricket to the highest
level before a stress-related illness cut short his career and forced
him to hang up his boots in March 2008.
Matthew Maynard,
Somerset's director of cricket, said: "Marcus still has so much to
offer, both on and off the field. The runs he scores, the experience he
brings and the knowledge that he passes on to the younger players make
him a vital member of this squad."
Over the last two seasons,
Marcus has demonstrated a tremendous desire to continue playing for the
County and we are all delighted that he will be back out there breaking
records for us again next year," he added.
