Zimbabwe are without a full-time head coach since the board sacked Dav Whatmore after a string of indifferent performances from the national team. Whatmore, who was appointed before the 2015 World Cup, oversaw a lean period for the team that included a sixth-place finish in the group stages of the 50-over showpiece event and a qualifying stage exit at the 2016 World T20 in India. During Whatmore's reign, Zimbabwe also conceded ODI series to Afghanistan at home and in UAE.
Whatmore's sacking led to the appointment of former South Africa pacer Makhaya Ntini on an interim basis. Ntini has been at the helm since India's visit in Zimbabwe and has overseen the side's ODI & T20I series defeats to the sub-continent side. Earlier this month, Zimbabwe's return to Test cricket began on inauspicious note under Ntini as the visiting New Zealand side blanked them 2-0.
When contacted, ZC officials didn't confirm if Ntini would look to apply for the full-time role. Stephen Mangongo, the former head coach of the side and now in-charge of the Under-19 side, is reported to have expressed an interest to reprise his role with the senior team.
