West Indian legend and former captain Courtney Walsh has been
appointed Bangladesh's new bowling coach until the 2019 World Cup,
replacing Heath Streak who fulfilled the responsibilities of the role
for two years until May.
Walsh, whose stint as West Indies'
selector ended in August, will take over the new role in September.
"Having watched Bangladesh cricket from afar over the years, they are a
seriously talented bunch of players," Walsh said on Wednesday (August
31). "Chandika Hathurusingha has done a wonderful job thus far as Head
Coach so hopefully I can complement his skills and continue the positive
progress.
"Obviously the West Indies is my home but the chance to
go in a new direction in coaching at the international level with a
talented group, was one I couldn't let that opportunity pass."
This
will be his maiden major coaching role after his retirement in 2001,
when he was the leading wicket-taker in Tests. Walsh has since, been
involved in various administration roles including mentor with the
Caribbean Premier League's Jamaica Tallawahs, the national board's
selector and the manager of the national Under-19 side.
Walsh
finished his career with 519 Test wickets and 227 One-Day International
ones in a career that spanned over 17 years. He was also named as one of
Wisden's Cricketers of the year in 1987.
He will join the team
ahead of England's tour, who have decided to go ahead with travelling to
the Asian nation after initial apprehensions following the Dhaka attack
in July.
