Mustafizur Rahman is likely to undergo a shoulder surgery next
month - one which could have him sidelined for almost six months. The
Bangladesh left-arm paceman, who was in England playing for Sussex in
the T20 Blast, was ruled out of the tournament after he picked up the
shoulder injury after two games, and was subsequently recommended to
undergo surgery for his SLAP (Superior Labrum from Anterior to
Posterior) tear.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board
are reportedly contemplating whether the surgery, required for the tear
that involves the ring of cartilage that surrounds the socket of the
shoulder joint, be done in England or Australia. If Mustafizur is ruled
out for the speculated period of time, he will miss England's tour of
Bangladesh in October and the tour to New Zealand later in the year.
"In
the last few days we have sent his reports to a number of places,"
Jalal Yunus, the BCB media committee chairman, was quoted as saying on ESPNCricinfo
on Saturday (July 30). "We want him to be operated under the best
surgeons. We have found two specialists in the UK and one in Australia.
By Monday we can decide who will operate on Mustafizur's shoulder. He is
mentally prepared for the operation. This sort of injury usually is
treated conservatively but we are not going that way with Mustafizur
because the doctors have said that it might recur in the future."
Mustafizur
seemingly has a long tryst with injuries. He first had an injured
shoulder during the series against Zimbabwe earlier this year in
January. He then missed majority of the Asia Cup in February with a side
strain which also had him miss parts of the World Twenty20.
Hamstring
and ankle injuries delayed him going over to England to join Sussex. He
was also kept away from the Pakistan Super League (PSL) because of
injury, and refrained from going to the Caribbean Premier League (CPL)
to avoid being overstressed.
