South Group
Essex v Surrey
Essex
suffered a 66-run defeat against Surrey at the County Ground in
Chelmsford in their Royal London One-Day Cup encounter on Sunday (July
24). Set a target of 314, Essex folded for 247 in 41.2 overs to hand
Surrey two points.
Overcoming a lean patch, Jesse
Ryder hammered a 110-ball 131 to keep his team in the hunt but with no
other batsmen stepping up, they fell well short. Reduced to 119 for 5,
Ryder added 91 with Ashar Zaidi (27) to delay the inevitable. Jade
Dernbach ended with figures of 4 for 41 while Stuart Meaker bagged two.
Earlier,
Steven Davies (82) and some late blitz from Ben Foakes (45 off 29)
lifted Surrey past the 300-run mark. They got off to a solid start
courtesy a 94-run stand between Jason Roy (55) and Aaron Finch (41).
Both
Finch and Roy were dismissed in space of 17 balls but Davies and Rory
Burns (52) did well not to let the advantage slip away. They added 92
runs at more than run-a-ball to keep the runs flowing.Davies's
81-ball stay finally came to an end in the 43rd over when he was caught
behind off Ryan ten Doeschate. Ravi Bopara ended with figures of 3 for
33 while ten Doeschate bagged two.
Brief scores: Surrey 313/8 (Steven Davies 82; Ravi Bopara 3-33) beat Essex 247 (Jesse Ryder 131; Jade Dernbach 4-41) by 66 runs.
Gloucestershire v Sussex
Handy
contributions from Michael Klinger (46) and Tom Smith (43 not out)
helped Gloucestershire post 242 for 8 before the bowlers wrapped up
Sussex for 191 to seal a 51-run win.
Gloucestershire
were, at one stage, reduced to 197 for 7 before Smith and Patrick
Grieshaber (20) added 45 runs in the last six overs to lift the team to a
decent total.
In reply, Harry Finch (87 not out)
fought hard but with little support coming from other batsmen, the team
eventually fell short.Reduced to 59 for 4, Finch and Ben
Brown (39) scored 70 runs for the fifth-wicket stand to revive the
chase. However, once Brown was dismissed, the chase fell apart rather
quickly.
Brief scores: Gloucestershire 242/8 (Michael Klinger 46; Chris Jordan 3-55) beat Sussex 191 (Harry Finch 87*; Tom Smith 4-26) by 51 runs.
Middlesex v Kent
At
Lord's, Paul Stirling hammered an 112 while Eoin Morgan too warmed up
with a century ahead of the limited-overs series against Pakistan to
help Middlesex canter to a six-wicket win over Kent.
Middlesex
got off to a shaky start and lost Ryan Higgins (0) and Nicholas Gubbins
(0) with just 16 runs on the board. However, there was no respite for
the bowlers after that as Stirling-Morgan collaboration yielded 214
runs.
Earlier, Sean Dickson missed out on his
maiden List A century after he was dismissed for 99 by Steven Finn. The
pacer, released from the England squad for the on-going second Test
against Pakistan, bowled ten overs to give away just 31 runs and bagged
two wickets.
Darren Stevens scored 61 but on the day Stirling and Morgan were too good to give Kent any chance.
Brief scores: Kent 238/7 (Sean Dickson 99; Tim Murtagh 2-28) lost to Middlesex 239/4 (Paul Stirling 112, Eoin Morgan 103*) by 6 wickets.
Somerset v Glamorgan
Craig
Overton, Lewis Gregory and Roelof van der Merwe shared nine wickets
between them to help Somerset trounce Glamorgan by 33 runs by
Duckworth-Lewis Stern method at the County ground in Taunton.
Peter
Trego (80) and Jim Allenby (53) helped Somerset post 322 for 7 in their
quota of overs. Glamorgan were set a revised target of 313 in 4 overs
but could last just 45.2 overs.
Somerset were
helped hugely after the first three stands yielded 63, 86 and 66
respectively to set up the platform for a big total. Overton then
hammered an unbeaten 27-ball 37 to lift the team past the 300-run mark.
There
were plenty of handy contributions in the Glamorgan chase but with
batsmen failing to convert their starts in the big chase, they were
forced to play catch-up for most parts before their reply ran out of
steam.
Brief scores: Somerset 322/7 (Peter
Trego 80; Michael Hogan 3-62) beat Glamorgan 279 (David Lloyd 46; Lewis
Gregory 3-48, Roelof van der Merwe 3-54, Craig Overton 3-56) by 33 runs
by DLS method.

From 17 for 1, they
lost wickets at an alarming rate inside the first ten overs and slipped
to 19 for 6, with Rikki Clarke accounting for five of those.
The
60-run partnership between Joe Leach and Ed Barnard helped the visitors
breach the 100-run mark before being restricted to a paltry 115. The
hosts comfortably chased down the target in the 23rd over, for the loss
of just two wickets. Wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose struck an unbeaten 54 off

131 as Yorkshire posted a daunting 376 on the board.
The

picking three. Lewis Hill was the only batsman to put up a resistance
as he stroked a 49-ball 55.

second half of the innings with No.3 batsman Rob Keogh hitting a
blistering 110-ball 134.

(Gordon Muchall 42; Azharullah 5-43, Graeme White 2-34) by 170 runs.
Nottinghamshire vs Derbyshire
Nottinghamshire
beat Derbyshire by 65 runs at the Welbeck Colliery Cricket Club Ground
after opener Riki Wessels's century led them to 340 in their innings.
Wessels hit 17 boundaries and four sixes in his 85-ball 114. He was
supported by Brendon Taylor who scored 44.
After
Wessels's dismissal, in the 26th over when the team's scoreboard read
170, captain Chris Read hit an unbeaten half-century to lead his side to
the challenging score.
The visitors lost skipper Wes
Durston early in the mammoth chase but his opening partner Ben Slater
scored a sparkling half-century at the other end. His wicket in the 13th
over ended their hopes as Derbyshire lost half of their side with just
150 on the board. Harry Gurney picked up three wickets to keep the
visitors to 275 in the 46th over.
