Alzarri Joseph, the 19-year old pacer, has been included in the West
Indies 14-member squad for the second Test against India to be played at
Kingston in Jamaica from Saturday (July 30).
Joseph played an
instrumental role in West Indies' Under-19 World Cup win earlier this
year - bagging 13 wickets in six matches. The young pacer has also
scalped 24 wickets in eight First-Class matches for Leewards Islands,
with the best figures of 7 for 46.
He is currently representing St
Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League,
having returned with figures of 4-41 in his last outing after a
forgetful match against Jamaica Tallawahs, where he leaked 63 runs off
his wicketless four overs.
"We feel that Alzarri, who led the
attack so expertly in the ICC Youth World Cup earlier this year in
Bangladesh, will now benefit from the professional guidance of our
coaching staff and the presence of fast bowling legend Joel Garner as
manager," Courtney Browne, chairman of West Indies selection panel said.
"As
we develop our Test team, we see this as a positive step in the
process. We would like to wish the team every success for the rest of
the series."
West Indies were thrashed by an innings and 92 runs
in Antigua in the first of the four-match Test series, and would look to
put up a more competitive show in the second clash. The lack of zing in
the pace attack could have been one of the crucial factors in selecting
Joseph in the squad.
