Two days after losing to the already-qualified Guyana Amazon
Warriors, the Kieron Pollard-led Barbados Tridents are set to face the
second-placed side once again in a must-win encounter at the Central
Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Florida on Sunday (July
31). For the Warriors, a win will guarantee them a chance to finish in
the top two.
The Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2016 is at a such a
delicate phase of the league stage that each result has its
ramification on the other teams. St Kitts & Nevis Patriots, the side
that will surely finish with the wooden spoon this season, caused an
upset on Friday when they beat play-off aspirants Trinbago Knight
Riders. That result came as a lifeline for the Tridents. As it stands,
only the two teams - Jamaica Tallawahs and Guyana Amazon Warriors - have
sealed their berth in the playoffs.
The last two spots is still
up for grabs, with three teams vying for it. St Lucia Zouks are the
best-placed in that endeavour, with eight points in third place and two
more games to go. At fourth, are Dwayne Bravo's Knight Riders who have
eight points with one fixture - against St Kitts & Nevis Patriots on
Sunday (July 31) - to go, while Tridents have seven points in nine
fixtures.
The equation:
- If Tridents lose, they will
be out of the competition, with Warriors and Knight Riders occupying
the third and fourth spots on the table.
- For Tridents to
advance, they will not just need to win their last fixture, but also
hope for Knight Riders to lose their last game or St Lucia Zouks to lose
both their remaining matches.
What: Barbados Tridents vs Guyana Amazon Warriors, 28th Match, Caribbean Premier League.
When: July 31, 04:00 PM Local time (1:30 am IST).
Where: Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground, Florida.
Team news:
Barbados Tridents: The
need of the hour for Pollard's men is to tighten the screws in all
departments. While Shoaib Malik and David Wiese contributed with the bat
in their previous fixture, the rest of the batting order's inability to
provide ample support led to their downfall. Tridents need Kyle Hope
and Ahmed Shehzad to fire the team to a breezy start, on which they can
build their essay. Raymon Reifer impressed with the ball in the last
outing, but the bowlers' failure to break the dangerous opening stand
between Smith and Nic Maddinson played a key role in the result.
Guyana Amazon Warriors: Given
that the Warriors are already through to the play-offs, there is need
for them to guard against complacency. Their previous win against the
Tridents came at the right time as it helped them turn the tide after
two successive defeats. Against a side that will look to play of its
skin, Smith's men will hope to carry forward their clinical performance
from Friday.
