After his one-year ban from bowling in international cricket
expired earlier this month, Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez is set
to undergo re-testing on his modified action. In 2015, Hafeez was handed
a 12-month suspension by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after
two independent assessments found his action illegal, within a two-year
period.
Despite the recent end of his ban, the
35-year-old hasn't bowled in Pakistan's ongoing Test series in England,
since the remedial work on his action was delayed by the knee injury
sustained in 2016 ICC World Twenty20. However, Intikhab Alam, the team
manager, is hopeful that Hafeez will be able to appear for a re-test at
Loughborough after the conclusion of the second Test in Manchester.
"Final
decision on Mohammad Hafeez's test on his bowling action in the
ICC-accredited facility at Loughborough shall be taken in the next few
days," Alam said in a statement on Saturday (July 24). "Since his
recovery from the injury in the right knee that he sustained during the
ICC World T20, Hafeez has recommenced remedial work on his bowling
action.
"But owing to the time lost due to injury
as well as his concentration on batting practice afterwards, Hafeez has
not been able to devote adequate time to the remedial work. In the last
couple of weeks however, he has resumed working on it in the nets.
Hafeez is confident that in the next few days he would be able to
present himself for the test."
Hafeez, who was
reported for the second time within a two-year period after being
reassessed and cleared by the ICC, was handed a one-year suspension
before being eligible to apply for reassessment again. He was reported
for the first time in international cricket during the first Test
against New Zealand in Abu Dhabi, in November 2014. The off spinner's
action was found to have exceeded the permissible 15-degree limit.
Hafeez appeared for a re-test and was cleared in 2015. However, the
player was reported once again, in the Galle Test against Sri Lanka
later that year, and subsequently banned from bowling in international
cricket.
