All-round McLaren stars in Hampshire's narrow win

Warwickshire vsDurham
Sam Hain's century went in vain as Durham romped home to a comfortable four-wicket victory on Wednesday (July 27) at the Roseworth Terrace in Gosforth.

Put into bat by Paul Collingwood, Warwickshire wobbled early after William Porterfield's scratchy start ended with an insignificant contribution. Nonetheless, Hain's 115-ball 107 included two useful stands with Ian Bell (45-ball 31) and Tim Ambrose (89-ball 86) for the second (72) and third wicket (143) respectively. Some lusty blows by Laurie Evans and Rikki Clarke in the death overs took the side to 292 for 7.

Durham adopted a steady approach to begin with, but ensured the side stayed in the hunt. Mark Stoneman (83-ball 56) put on a 67-run stand for the opening wicket with Keaton Jennings and a 46-run stand with Scott Borthwick (67-ball 66) for the second wicket. However, it was a breezy half-century by Collingwood that put the visitors in the driver's seat. Michael Richardson ensured the initiative was never lost as Stuart Poynter finished off the formalities with a boundary in the 48th over.

Brief Scores: Warwickshire 292/7 in 50 overs (Sam Hain 107, Tim Ambrose 86; Usman Arshad 3-50, Chris Rushworth 2-65) lost to Durham 296/6 in 47.4 overs (Scott Borthwick 66, Mark Stoneman 56; Recordo Gordon 2-49; Ateeq Javid 1-14) by 4 wickets.

Nottinghamshire vs Yorkshire
Tim Bresnan's unbeaten 95 helped Yorkshire pull off a thrilling two-wicket win over Nottinghamshire with two balls to spare at North Marine Road Ground in Scarborough.

Chasing a target of 252, Yorkshire's innings fell wayward as they lost three wickets in the space of seven balls. Adam Lyth perished after getting his side off to a flying start and then his dismissal was followed by Travis Head and Jack Leaning's departures for nought. Alex Lees (7) followed soon after as they were reduced to 50 for 4. Adil Rashid put on a crucial 97-run stand with Bresnan to revive the chase, before being dismissed by Daniel Christian. The Australian all-rounder struck twice more to nearly take his team through. However, Bresnan in company of Azeem Rafiq held on as they overcame the total with two wickets in hand.

Earlier in the day, the pace trio of Bresnan, David Willey and Liam Plunkett had reduced Nottinghamshire to 46 for 5, sending Michael Lumb (9), Riki Wessels (36), Greg Smith (0), Brendan Taylor (0) and Samit Patel (0) back. An unbeaten 89 from Steven Mullaney and Christian's 52 helped them go past the 250-run mark.

Brief Scores: Nottinghamshire 251/9 in 50 overs (Steven Mullaney 89*, Daniel Christian 52; Tim Bresnan 2-24, Liam Plunkett 2-35) lost to Yorkshire 254/8 in 49.4 overs (Tim Bresnan 95*, Adil Rashid 41; Daniel Christian 3-44, Jake Ball 2-47) by 2 wickets.

Northamptonshire vs Worcestershire
Richard Gleeson's fifer led Northamptonshire to a 23-run win over Worcestershire at the New Road in Worcester. It put paid to Tom Kohler-Cadmore's fine century as the hosts' lower order failed to put up a fight at the death.

Earlier in the day, Daryl Mitchell, Worcestershire captain, won the toss and elected to field. Despite a wobbly start, which resulted in the fall of three early wickets - Joshua Cobb, Rob Keogh and Alex Wakely, Northamptonshire managed to post a big total. Their innings was largely helped by quickfire half-centuries by Ben Duckett and Steven Cook, to go with a well-paced 92-ball 87 by Adam Rossington which took them to 319 for 7.

Worcestershire were ahead in the chase for most parts of their innings as Mitchell and Thomas Charles Fell put on 68 and 125-run stands with Kohler-Cadmore for the first and second wicket respectively. Three quick wickets had reduced them from 193 for 1 to 219 for 4, before Rose Whiteley partnered Kohler-Cadmore for another useful stand of 42 runs.

However, once both of them fell in succession, the momentum shifted in favour of the hosts, and Gleeson's superb spell of bowling at the death ensured that it never slipped. The required rate rose drastically and wickets fell quickly as the game completely slipped out of their hands.

Brief Scores: Northamptonshire 319/7 in 50 overs (Adam Rossington 87, Ben Duckett 86; Joe Leach 3-79, Daryl Mitchell 1-37) beat Worcestershire 296 in 49.5 overs (Tom Kohler-Cadmore 119, Thomas Charles Fell 54; Richard Gleeson 5-47, Graeme White 3-59) by 23 runs.

Derbyshire vs Lancashire
A gutsy 91 from Billy Godleman couldn't prevent Derbyshire from losing to Lancashire at the County Ground in Derby as Kyle Jarvis starred with the ball by picking up four wickets during the run chase.

Chasing 282 for victory, the hosts were well placed at 177 for 2 in the 36th over before losing Wayne Madsen. The suffered a major blow in the very next over when Godleman was bowled by Steven Croft. These two wickets turned the tide towards Lancashire's favour as their bowlers restricted the opposition to 254 for 9.

Earlier in the day, the visitors recovered from a disastrous start where they lost the first three wickets with just 74 on the board to post 281 in the end. Liam Livingstone struck a majestic 98-ball 98 to revive Lancashire's innings and was named the player of the match. He was well supported by skipper Croft who made 68 from 75 deliveries.

Brief scores: Lancashire 281/8 in 50 overs (Liam Livingstone 98, Steven Croft 68; Ben Cotton 3-62) beat Derbyshire 254/9 in 50 overs (Billy Godleman 91, Hamish Rutherford 47; Kyle Jarvis 4-31) by 27 runs.

Surrey vs Gloucestershire
Surrey thrashed Gloucestershire by 165 runs to avenge the defeat they suffered at the hands of the same opposition in last year's final. Opting to bat first, half-centuries from Steven Davis, Rory Burns and Sam Curran led them to 323 for 8 in their 50 overs. Davis put on 77 for the third wicket as the hosts lost both their openers by the eighth over. He then added 62 for the fourth wicket before getting dismissed for 79.

While Burns went to score exactly 50, Curran provided the impetus in the end with a 56-ball 57.

The visitors began in disastrous fashion by losing skipper Michael Klinger in the fourth over for 11. Jade Dernbach removed Chris Dent and Phil Mustard as well reducing Gloucestershire to 24 for 3 by the sixth over. Hamish Marshall and Ian Cockbain revived the chase with an 85-run stand but the latter's dismissal triggered a collapse. Skipper Gareth Batty went on to pick five wickets as the visitors were dismissed for 158.

Brief scores: Surrey 323/8 in 50 overs (Steven Davies 79, Sam Curran 57; Liam Norwell 3-56) beat Gloucestershire 158 in 33.2 overs (Hamish Marshall 55; Gareth Batty 5-41, Jade Dernbach 3-33) by 165 runs.

Sussex vs Hampshire
South African all-rounder Ryan McLaren starred with both bat and ball to give Hampshire a thrilling nine-run win over Sussex in Hove. McLaren first smashed an unbeaten 46 off just 39 balls to propel his side to 268 after they were struggling at 198 for 6 in the 40th over and then came back with the ball to pick up three crucial wickets in the chase.

The visitors, who were asked to bat first lost Tom Alsop early in the innings but his opening partner Jimmy Adams went on to score 92 from 97 balls. Adam Wheater was involved in an 87-run stand with Adams before getting dismissed for 42. However, George Garton broke through the middle order to pull things back for the hosts before McLaren's cameo rescued Hampshire.

Even though Sussex were on the backfoot in the chase at 109 for 4 in the 29th over, Chris Nash and wicketkeeper Ben Brown hit half-centuries and put on 125 for the fifth wicket to turn the momentum in their favour. The hosts needed 35 from 22 balls at one stage before McLaren came back at the death to get rid of Brown. He then picked up Chris Jordan's wicket as well in the penultimate over as the visitors choked the hosts.

Brief scores: Hampshire 268/9 in 50 overs (Jimmy Adams 92, Ryan McLaren 46*; George Garton 3-40) beat Sussex 259/6 in 50 overs (Chris Nash 69*, Ben Brown 62; Ryan McLaren 3-54) by 9 runs.
