Kent vs Worcestershire

Kent seized control of their division two County Championship match against Worcestershire at St. Lawrence Ground in Canterbury on Wednesday (August 3) after seamer Mitchell Claydon picked up five wickets to dismantle the visitors for 211.

Claydon broke through the Worcestershire middle order after they were well placed at 102 for 2 at one stage. The 33-year-old then picked up four successive wickets to reduce the visitors to 127 for 6. Joe Clarke rescued his side with a fighting half-century but found no support from the other end. He was the last man out for 69. Matt Coles and James Tredwell picked up two wickets each for the hosts.

In reply, Kent openers made a strong start to their first innings as they were involved in a half-century stand. At the close of play, they had batted for 20 overs, scoring 55 runs in the process, and remained unbeaten.

Brief scores: Worcestershire 211 (Joe Clarke 69; Mitchell Claydon 5-42, James Tredwell 2-9) lead Kent 55/0 (Daniel Bell-Drummond 30*, Sean Dickson 19*) by 156 runs.

Glamorgan vs Northamptonshire

Teenage seamer Lukas Carey's terrific new-ball spell was the only highlight on a rain-affected first day's play between Glamorgan and Northamptonshire in Swansea.

Carey first managed to dismiss the in-form Ben Duckett for just 7, before getting rid of Sean Terry and Rob Keogh. Timm van der Gugten accounted for Rob Newton's wicket as the visitors made a disastrous start to their innings. They were reduced to 38 for 4 before Laurie Evans and wicketkeeper David Murphy steadied the ship.

Evans, who is on loan from Warwickshire, put on an unbeaten 70-run partnership with Murphy to take Northamptonshire to 108 for 4 before stumps were called. Only 34 overs were possible on the day and the teams will now be hoping for more action on Day 2,

Brief scores: Northamptonshire 108/4 (Laurie Evans 42*, David Murphy 29*; Lukas Carey 3-37) vs Glamorgan.
