Rangana Herath, the Sri Lanka left-arm spinner, on Thursday
(August 18) returned to the top-five of the International Cricket
Council (ICC) Test rankings for bowlers with his 13-wicket haul in the
third and final Test against Australia.
The
38-year-old returned figures of 6 for 81 and 7 for 64 in the two innings
of the Colombo Test which the hosts won by 163 runs to sweep the series
3-0. His match-winning figures, which was his seventh 10-wicket haul in
Tests, helped Herath climb three places up to the fifth spot in the
latest rankings. This is Herath's highest-ranking since he achieved the
fourth spot following the Wellington Test against New Zealand in January
2015.
England pacer James Anderson leads the
list with 870 points, 12 ahead of second-placed R Ashwin. Dale Steyn is
ranked third, 17 points behind the India off-spinner.
Dinesh
Chandimal and Dhananjaya de Silva, who notched up centuries in the
just-concluded Colombo Test, also made significant gains in the Test
batsmen rankings. The Sri Lanka vice-captain rose six slots to reach the
17th spot in the list which is still led by the Australia captain Steve
Smith. On the other hand, de Silva shot up 30 places to occupy the 37th
spot. Kaushal Silva, who scored 115 in the second innings, moved up
nine places to the 39th position.
For Australia,
the only consolation was the rise of David Warner and Shaun Marsh. The
Australia vice-captain gained one place to share the ninth spot with New
Zealand's Ross Taylor, while Marsh, who struck the first century for
Australia on the Sri Lanka tour in Colombo, has jumped 13 places to
reach the 33rd rank.
Smith, who scored 119 runs
in the first innings, has retained the top spot and leads England's Joe
Root by 28 points. Kane Williamson, the New Zealand skipper, is five
points behind the English No. 3 and would look to scale the difference
when his side takes the field against South Africa in Durban from August
19.
