Chris Tremain, the pacer from New South Wales, summoned a
match-winning, five-wicket-haul spell to power Australia A to a rapid
win by eight wickets in the second game of the Quadrangular A-Team
One-Day tournament in Townsville on Sunday (August 14). India A were
routed for a mere 55 runs in 15.4 overs with only Axar Patel lower down
the order managing to get to double figures. The Australian openers made
easy work of the chase as the home side cruised to a comfortable win in
17.1 overs.
Kurtis Patterson remained unbeaten on 23 not
out, while Marcus Stoinis essayed a steady hand of 19 before he was
dislodged by Yuzvendra Chahal. Chris Lynn (0) didn't last long as he was
winkled out by Axar. However, Peter Handscomb (11 not out) joined
forces with Patterson to pilot Australia A to a crushing win.
India
A's embarrassing capitulation turns out to be the second lowest List A
total made in Australia. On the other hand, the home team's batsmen
showed the required batting aptitude to gauge the tough conditions on
display.
Earlier, the formidable India A side was
rattled by the duo of Tremain and his impressive pace colleague from
Victoria, David Worrall. It was Tremain who put the tourists on the mat
by snaring the scalps of Faiz Fazal (3), Karun Nair (7), Manish Pandey
(0), Mandeep Singh (0) and Sanju Samson (4) to leave India A in dire
straits at 22 for 5 in the fifth over.
Worrall, who
had a prolific 2015-16 Sheffield Shield season with 44 wickets to his
name, then backed up Tremain's sterling spell with the new ball by
scything through the lower-middle order.
Kedar Jadhav
(4), Hardik Pandya (1), Dhawal Kulkarni (6) and Jaydev Unadkat (7) were
his victims. Only Axar offered some resistance by compiling a 25-ball
15 before falling to Michael Neser.
After putting up a
shambolic show in their first game, India A, under the guidance of
Rahul Dravid, will aim to bounce back when they go head-to-head against
South Africa A in Townsville on Wednesday (August 17).
Their opponents,
Australia, who would be ecstatic after bestriding India A, will next
take on National Performance Squad on Tuesday (August 16).
Brief Scores:
India A 55 in 15.4 overs (Axar Patel 15; Chris Tremain 5-25, Daniel
Worrall 4-26) lost to Australia A (Kurtis Patterson 23*, Marcus Stoinis
19; Axar Patel 1-8) by eight wickets.
