Hours after bowling Pakistan to a historic 75-run victory in the
first Test match against England at Lord's, double delight was in store
for leg-spinner Yasir Shah as he displaced incumbent England pacer James
Anderson as the new top-ranked Test bowler in the latest rankings
issued by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
Yasir
finished with match figures of 10-141 (6 for 72 and 4 for 69
respectively) as the tourists beat England by 75 runs to register their
first win at Lord's in 20 years and take 1-0 lead in the four-match
series. This was Yasir's first 10-wicket haul in Tests and he has now
taken 86 wickets from just 13 Tests. Yasir now has the chance to become
the fastest bowler to take 100 Test wickets by surpassing England's
George Lohmann's record who reached the triple-figure mark in his 16th
Test, back in 1896.
Yasir becomes the first
Pakistan bowler to occupy the top spot in ICC Test rankings since
Mushtaq Ahmed, the former leg-spinner and current bowling coach of the
team, achieved the distinction in December, 1996.
Yasir
came into the Lord's Test at fourth position, behind Anderson, India's
Ravichandran Ashwin and England's Stuart Broad. With Anderson missing
the first game due to a shoulder injury, Yasir gained 32 points to
displace the England pace spearhead at the top of the table. Yasir has
logged in 878 points and is closely followed by Ashwin, who has 871
while Anderson has 868 points with Broad coming in fourth with 859
points.
Steven Smith continues to remain the
highest ranked Test batsman with 925 points while Pakistan captain,
Misbah-ul-Haq, who scored a century in the first innings at Lord's,
moved up one place to nine. Asad Shafiq, the Pakistan middle-order
batsman, also gained two places to move to 11th spot.
Chris
Woakes was another significant gainer in the latest rankings. The
Warwickshire pacer, who finished with a career-best match haul of 11-102
(6 for 70 and 5 for 32 respectively) jumped 28 places to occupy his
career-best 36th position. Jonny Bairstow, wicketkeeper-batsman, gained
two places and is now ranked at 16.
