Zimbabwe Cricket announced on Thursday. The 50-over competition
will feature eight teams, each consisting national team players who
have not been picked for the upcoming Test series against New Zealand.
"ZPL
is a very important competition involving Zimbabwe's top clubs fighting
it out for the national honours," Givemore Makoni, ZC head of cricket
affairs, said.
"It's top-notch cricket with all
national team players not in the Test side expected to turn out for
clubs in the league. This means youngsters will get the chance to play
with and against experienced international players, which will quickly
bring them through."
Each team will have to
include one under-19 player in their playing XI and at least three
national team or A team players have been signed up by the clubs.
Takashinga
Patriots 1, Takashinga Patriots 2 and Rainbow are the three teams from
Harare Metropolitan and Mashonaland Central. Easter Lions will represent
Manicaland and Mashonaland East, whereas Muzvezve Tigers are chosen
from Mashonaland West and Midlands.
Masvingo's
Southern Lions, Associate Provincial League winners, have been rewarded
with a spot in the tournament. Amakhosi and Inkatha from Bulawayo
Metropolitan and Matabeleland North complete the list.
Takashinga
Patriots 1 will take on Rainbow in the tournament opener on Saturday at
Takashinga Sports Club in Harare. Masvingo Sports Club will host the
contest between Amakhosi and Eastern Lions, while the Southern Lions and
Muzvezve clash at Old Harareans, and Inkatha and Takashinga Patriots 2
face off at Kwekwe Sports Club on the same day.
The
competition will feature seven rounds overall, the second of which is
set commence from next Saturday (July 30). The team that finishes with
the most number of points at the end of the seventh round will be
crowned champion.
