In reply, Pakistan top-order collapsed yet again to Woakes who took three wickets in the final session.

Stats highlights from Day 2 of Old Trafford Test:

2 Higher individual Test scores than Root's 254 at Old Trafford - Bob Simpson made 311 for Australia and Ken Barrington hit 256 for England in the same Test match in 1964.

254 by Root is the third-highest score by an England No. 3 after an unbeaten 336 by Wally Hammond against New Zealand in 1933 and 258 by Tom Graveney in Nottingham in 1957. The last England No. 3 to score a double hundred was Ian Bell who hit 235 against India at Kennington Oval in the 2011 series.

Overall, it is the sixth instance of a Pakistan bowler conceding more than 200 runs in an innings.

761 runs scored by Johnny Bairstow in 12 innings in 2016 is the second most by an England wicketkeeper in a calendar year - Matt Prior's tally of 777 in 2012 in 22 innings being the highest thus far.
