It was a tough day at the office for the West Indies bowlers as the
Indian team, led by an unbeaten 143 from their captain Virat Kohli,
posted a commanding score of 302 for 4 at stumps on Day 1 of the first
Test in Antigua. After enduring a challenging morning session, Kohli and
Shikhar Dhawan crafted fine knocks to help India finish on a strong
note, despite reckless shot-selection from their colleagues. Devendra
Bishoo, with figures of 3 for 108, was the most successful bowler for
the hosts. The 30-year-old leggie, who accounted for the wickets of
Cheteshwar Pujara, Dhawan and Indian vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane,
addressed the media at the conclusion of play on Day 1.
Excerpts from the press conference:
What do make of the wicket?I
think the pitch is a very good pitch. It's a batting pitch. We, as
bowlers, have to be patient as much as possible and take it one ball at a
time.
Do you think your team could have been in a better position?Yeah,
we could have been in a better position probably. At they end of the
day, it's a good pitch and the Indian batsmen kept relishing it. We just
didn't put the ball in the areas as much, but we bowled good in
patches. We just have to take it one over at a time and take it session
by session. Put the ball in the right areas for as long as possible, and
make it hard for them. At the end of it, we have to be patient.
Do you consider that West Indies are under pressure? No,
I don't think we are under any pressure at all. The game could change
just like that. It was a tough day for us, but you never know. Tomorrow
morning we're going to come and put the work in.
Your views on Shannon Gabriel?I
think Shannon bowled really good upfront today and he started off very
very well. He bowled with great pace. The rest of the bowlers, as I
said, bowled well in patches. We need to be a bit more patient because
the wicket is good.
Do you think the pitch will turn more later?Day 1 pitches don't turn that much. Day 3, day 4 and maybe day 5 it's going to turn more.
Were you surprised that Chase was bowled ahead of you?I
wasn't surprised. Chase and me are different bowlers and the ball was
newer. It was ideal to go with him first. I have got no problem with
that. At the end of the day, we are a team and we support one another in
everything we do.
Do you think the team would've benifitted from another frontline bowler? No,
no, no. At the end of day, whatever team we have to play with as a
team, we have to play. We support each other and give our 100%. I'm not
going to put anything on anybody. To play good cricket, bowlers have to
do their job and batsmen have to do theirs.
How tough do you find to bowl to Virat Kohli? It's
not challenging. At the end of the day, it's cricket. We have to be
patient. It's just the start of the series and there is a long way to
go. Everybody has good and bad days, we just have to move forward as a
team.
Chase bowled a lot today, is that his role? He's
more of a part-time off-spinner. But he's going to be bowling a lot of
overs. He's more like a batting all-rounder, but he's a very good
bowler.
