Ashton Agar, the Western Australian spinning all-rounder, could miss
Australia A's entire winter series in Queensland due to a serious
shoulder injury.
Cricket Australia confirmed on Wednesday (July
13) that the 22-year-old had injured his right shoulder ahead of
Australia's A series against South Africa starting on July 30. It is
believed Agar could be sidelined for three months but Alex Kountouris,
CA sports science and sports medicine manager, said it was unknown how
long the left-arm spinner would be sidelined for.
"Ashton injured
his right shoulder during a WACA pre-season training camp and scans have
confirmed that he has disrupted some of the structures that were
surgically repaired in April 2016," he said. "He is due to see a
specialist next week to determine if he will require surgery and when he
is likely to return to training and playing.
"He will definitely
miss the start of the Quadrangular A series, but whether he takes any
part in it and whether he will be fit for the Matador BBQ's One-Day Cup
will be determined in due course."
The injury is a cruel blow for
Agar, who is one of Australian cricket's most precocious talents after
memorably bursting onto the international scene three years ago when he
scored 98 on Test debut at Trent Bridge batting at No.11.
Agar has
not played Test cricket since that Ashes series in 2013 but was a
surprise inclusion in Australia's World T20 squad earlier this year. His
sole match of the tournament was in Australia's opening loss to New
Zealand in Dharamsala, where Agar's only over cost 18 runs.
Despite
an underwhelming World T20, Agar is seen as an international prospect
in all three formats after showing promise in recent seasons with both
bat and ball for Western Australia and Perth Scorchers.
Australia A's winter campaign will also feature 50-over and four-day matches against India A, which runs through mid-September.
