Legendary Sri Lankan batsman Kumar Sangakkara turned back the clock
to score a blistering 72 to help Surrey thrash a Shahid Afridi-less
Hampshire by 80 runs on Thursday (June 9) at The Oval. An illness forced
Afridi out of the contest, and at the other end, West Indies
all-rounder Dwayne Bravo made his debut for the hosts.
Sangakkara
put on 114 runs in just 10 overs for the second wicket with debutant
Dominic Sibley after the hosts lost Jason Roy early for 9. Sibley was
dismissed for 67 but Sangakkara went on to score 72 off just 35 balls
that contained nine fours and two sixes.
The home side posted a
commanding 188 in the end. Hampshire struggled right from the start in
the chase as only two batsmen managed to go past double figures.
The
visitors lost four wickets in the powerplay and never managed to
recover from that situation to get bowled out for 108 in the 17th over.
Opener Lewis McManus made 41 and Gareth Andrew scored 31 off 22 balls in
the end but the rest were dismissed for single digit scores.
Ravi
Rampaul, Zafar Ansari, Bravo and Sibley picked up two wickets each.
Sibley's all-round show in his maiden T20 appearance earned him the
player of the match award.
The Hampshire players wore black
armbands as a mark of respect after 20-year-old Hamza Ali, who made his
debut for the club earlier in April, passed away.
Brief scores: Surrey 188 for 5 in 20 overs (Kumar Sangakkara 72, Dominic Sibley 67, Darren Sammy 2-27) beat Hampshire 108 in 16.3 overs (Lewis McManus 41, Dwayne Bravo 2-3 Zafar Ansari 2-12) by 80 runs.
