Hamilton Masakadza came close to breaking Chris Gayle's record of the
highest score in Twenty20 cricket when he hammered an unbeaten 71-ball
162 in Zimbabwe's domestic T20 match against Mashonaland Eagles on
Thursday (February 11) while playing for Mountaineers.
Mountaineers
went on to win the match by 125 runs by Duckworth-Lewis method after
posting 242 for 3 in 20 overs. Masakadza missed Gayle's mark by 13 runs.
The West Indies batsman made the record batting for Royal Challengers
Bangalore against Pune Warriors in the 2013 edition of the Indian
Premier League in Bangalore. Masakadza hit two sixes to overtake
McCullum and Aaron Finch.
Masakadza's innings comprised of 14 hits
to the fence and 11 over it and overtook Brendon McCullum (158 not
out). The New Zealand captain has scored 158 twice in T20 games for
Kolkata Knight Riders in the first match of the IPL in 2008 and then for
Warwickshire in July last year.
Finch muscled 156 against England in August 2013 and holds the fifth spot on the list of highest T20 scores.
Brief scores: Mountaineers 242-3 in 20 overs (Hamilton Masakadza 162*) beat Mashonaland Eagles 107-9 in 12.1 overs (Cephas Zhuwao 58) by 125 runs by D/L method.
