Anurag
Thakur, president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI),
has called upon media managers of state associations to expand the
horizons of their responsibilities beyond looking after arrangements for
members of the media. Addressing the visiting media managers during a
workshop at the board's annual conclave in Dharamsala, Thakur cited the
need for a renewed focus on fan engagement and use of social media.
"The
focus should be on engagement and not mere arrangement," the board
president was quoted as saying by PTI on Wednesday (June 22). "The media
managers should now be able to tell the story of Indian cricket and
also be responsible in highlighting the good work done by their
respective state associations using the digital platform."
During
the workshop, Thakur also had representatives from Facebook and Twitter
impress upon the assembled media managers on the efficient use of
social media to connect with fans. "I want the media managers to reach
out to those young fans on social media with relevant informations,
which will be a way to engage them. We have already asked each state
association to have their official Facebook and Twitter page, where
information will be uploaded," Thakur said.
One
of the participating media managers said the workshop indeed was a
fruitful one. "It was a long and exhaustive process. I must admit that
we got an entirely different perspective of how the role of the media
manager has changed. The BCCI president was very clear on the kind of
changes he wants from us. We will go back and seek necessary permission
to bring upon changes," said the official requesting anonymity.
The
convention comprises of several workshops and meetings. A seminar that
is set to include captains, coaches and the Indian Premier League (IPL)
Governing Council, will also take place. The conclave is slated to end
with a working committee meeting of the board members on June 24,
following which an announcement on the next India coach is expected to
be made.
