Marsh lavishes praise on 'free spirit' Maxwell

Mitchell Marsh, the Australian all-rounder, hailed his teammate Glenn Maxwell after the latter struck an unbeaten 46 off just 26 deliveries during the run chase against West Indies in the One-Day International tri-series on Tuesday (June 21). Maxwell put on 62 from 42 balls with Marsh, who anchored the chase with an unbeaten 79, as Australia chased down 283 with eight balls to spare to enter the tri-series final.
"I said give yourself a few balls mate and then go for it," Marsh said after the game. "I was literally speechless at the other end watching an innings like that."
Maxwell walked out in a situation where he was under severe pressure to deliver after getting dropped earlier in the series. He had also not reached double figures in his last five ODIs but Marsh emphasized his teammate's importance in limited overs cricket, given his ability to turn a game around single-handedly.
"Maxi has had a lot of doubt and hasn't been in the greatest of form. But an innings like that tonight shows why he's one of the first picked in this side, because he's so dangerous and can win us games like that in a few overs.
"He actually told me we'll just take them for ones. Next thing he's playing a reverse-sweep for six. I absolutely loved it. Maxi is a free spirit, you've just got to let him go and do what he does. When it comes off like that it's unbelievable to watch."
Marsh was also pleased with his own effort with the bat after going through a lean patch in this tournament. He walked out to bat in the 19th over in a tricky situation but put on 122 for the fifth wicket with skipper Steven Smith, who made 78, before seeing off the chase remaining unbeaten.
"It's right up there, I think any time you can bat through an innings and be not out in a win in a crucial chase like that, it's very satisfying," Marsh said of his own innings. "I've put in a lot of work. I haven't had much of an opportunity - well, I have, but I haven't taken them in this series. So it was really nice to step up and get us over the line."
