The search for the right man to coach Team India will enter 'D' day
as the cricket board's Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), comprising the
legendary trio of Sachin Tendulkar (who'll give his inputs via video
conferencing), Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, with former BCCI secretary
Sanjay Jagdale working as its chief co-ordinator, interviews the
candidates at a five star hotel in Kolkata on Tuesday (June 21).
According
to sources, two of the aspirants who've been invited to make a 30 to
45-minute presentation on how they plan to go about doing the most
high-profile coaching job in world cricket are former India and Mumbai
batsmen Lalchand Rajput and Pravin Amre. Rajput, who played two Tests
for India in the 80s, was the cricket manager of the team when India won
the inaugural World T20 in South Africa in 2007, and later was coach
when the Men in Blue clinched the 'CB' Series in Australia for the first
time.
He was replaced by former South African
opener Gary Kirsten later, and went on to coach India 'A' for almost the
next four years on various tours, where the team did well. Quite a few
members of the present Indian team were a part of those sides.
Amre
played 11 Tests and 37 ODIs in the early 90s, coached the Mumbai team
to three Ranji titles, but is more well-known as a personal coach-mentor
to quite a few Indian batsmen - Ajinkya Rahane (amongst the present
lot, besides Robin Uthappa and Dinesh Karthik too).
There
are quite a few aspirants who hadn't received a call from the BCCI till
Monday evening. TOI can confirm that former India players Sandeep
Patil, Venkatesh Prasad, Robin Singh and Balwinder Singh Sandhu have not
been invited, at the time of writing this. Patil and Prasad are current
senior and junior national selectors. Two of the leading candidates in
this race - leg-spin legend Anil Kumble and ex-India all-rounder and
team director Ravi Shastri, did not respond to calls or messages, but
are likely to be present in Kolkata.
Camp before Windies tour
The
new coach will immediately get a chance to bond with the Virat
Kohli-led Indian Test team at a short training camp ahead of the West
Indies tour, likely to be held in Bangalore in June end. The team, which
will play four Tests in the Caribbean, will leave for the tour on July
5.
