Marlon Samuels, the West Indies batsman, was named the Cricketer of
the Year and the One-Day International Cricketer of the Year on Tuesday
(July 20) at the West Indies Cricket Board's annual awards function in
Antigua.
Samuels hit an unbeaten 85 in the World Twenty20 final
earlier this year against England to help his side win the title for the
second time. Even though the 35-year-old has been quite poor in Tests
after his ton against England last year in April, he has been in great
form in One-Day Internationals as seen recently in the tri-series
involving Australia and South Africa at home.
Chris Gayle, who
smashed a ton to begin West Indies' campaign in the World T20, was
chosen as the T20 Player of the Year. Darren Bravo won the Test
Cricketer of the Year award while his half-brother Dwayne Bravo was
named the Carribean T20 Player of the Year.
Stafanie Taylor, the
women's captain, who led the side to World T20 glory in India earlier
this year, was named the Women's T20 Player of the Year and the ODI
Player of the Year.
Shimron Hetmyer was named the Under-19 player
of the year after he led the side to victory in the Under-19 World Cup
in Bangladesh. Jomel Warrican, the left-arm spinner, won the Emerging
Player of the Year award after making a sensational Test debut in Sri
Lanka last year where he took six wickets in his team's loss.
Jason
Mohammed and Veerasammy Permaul were rewarded for their consistency in
domestic cricket by being named the PCL 50-over Player of the Year and
PCL Four-day Player of the Year respectively.
