Lalit Modi, the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) president and the
brain behind the inception of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is
planning to start a similar league in his home state. According to a
report in the 'Indian Express', Modi isn't just planning to launch a
Twenty20 tournament, but he is also mulling at the possibility of
bringing in international players.
Despite Modi and the
current administrators in the Board of Control for Cricket in India
(BCCI) not being at the best of terms, the league isn't expected to face
any roadblock in terms of getting the No-Objection Certificate,
especially with the boards of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu already hosting
similar Twenty20 leagues.
"It's in the planning
stage and though nothing has been finalised yet, we will decide soon
whether to have a T20 league or not. The talks are on," RCA secretary
Sumendra Tiwary was quoted as saying by the Indian Express on Friday
(July 15).
"He (Modi) is part of it; after all he is the president of RCA," added Tiwary, when asked about the specific role of Modi.
The
BCCI has clarified that they don't intend to stop any state
associations from starting Twenty20 leagues, although it has clearly
stated in its guidelines that such associations can rope in players only
from their own states and shouldn't be seen poaching talents from other
states and countries.
"They can host the league
as it's a domestic tournament and anyway they are hosting their own
inter-district and other tournaments," a BCCI official was quoted as
saying in the same report.
