Lancashire vs Durham
A
fifer from Tom Smith after Luke Procter's third-day century wasn't
enough as Durham eked out a slender two-wicket victory over Lancashire
at the Trafalgar Road Ground in Southport on Tuesday (July 19).
Durham
had a stuttered start to their chase as they Kyle Jarvis and Smith
picked up a wicket each early. A 123-run third-wicket stand between
Keaton Jennings (82) and Jack Burnham (52) laid the perfect foundation
in chase. However, Simon Kerrigan and Smith pulled things back with
three swift wickets and attempted to derail Durham.
Ben
Stokes, who has been named in England's squad for the Old Trafford Test,
held the innings from the other end. He constantly threw caution to the
winds during his 43-ball knock of 36, studded with three sixes. He and
No. 10 batsman Adam Hickey pulled the team through. Even as Stokes
departed in the 77th over with four to get, Chris Rushworth, the last
batsman, completed the win with a boundary.
Brief scores:
Lancashire 204 & 333 (Luke Procter 122, Haseeb Hameed 53, Tom
Moores 35; Ben Stokes 3-50, Scott Borthwick 3-98) lost to Durham 291
& 247/8 (Keaton Jennings 82, Jack Burnham 52, Ben Stokes 36; Tom
Smith 5-25) by 2 wickets
Hampshire vs Surrey
Lewis
McManus (117 not out) fought hard, but without enough support, as
Hampshire lost seven wickets on third day's play at the Rose Bowl in
Southampton, in reply to Surrey's mammoth 637 for 7 declared.
Hampshire
began the day poorly, as Ryan McLaren was out hit-wicket without adding
to his overnight tally and Tom Alsop too fell cheaply, leaving the
hosts in tatters 82 for 4. Adam Wheater (59) and Sean Ervine (52)
revived the essay with a 102-run stand, but both fell in quick
succession, leaving McManus to bat with the tail. A 53-run stand with
No. 8 batsman Gareth Berg (40) and 71-run partnership with Gareth
Andrew, the No. 9 batsman, helped Hampshire drag their essay along.
At stumps, McManus was unbeaten on 117 but the home side have already lost nine wickets and still trail by 239 runs.
Brief scores:
Surrey 637/7 decl. (Ben Foakes 141*, Gareth Batty 110*, Aaron Finch 86;
Gareth Berg 3-85) lead Hampshire 398/9 (Lewis McManus 117*, Adam
Wheater 59, Sean Ervine 52; Mark Footitt 3-62) by 239 runs.
Nottinghamshire vs Somerset
In
an otherwise lacklustre scorecard, veteran opener Marcus Trescothick's
double century shone through as he nearly carried his bat, and helped
Somerset go past Nottinghamshire's first-innings total of 401 at Trent
Bridge. The left-hander played 355 balls for 218, an innings laced with
32 fours and a six. Only three other batsmen touched double-figures,
with the second-best individual score being 63 - by Jim Allenby - as
Imran Tahir left the visitors in a spin as he finished with sensational
figures of 7 for 112, including the scalp of Trescothick.
In
the final session of the day's play, Nottinghamshire batted and regained
the lead on their opponents, finishing on 58 for 2 at stumps.
Brief
scores: Nottinghamshire 401 (Steven Mullaney 165, Jake Libby 90; Craig
Overton 4-54, Jack Leach 3-120) & 58/2 lead Somerset 437 (Marcus
Trescothick 218, Jim Allenby 63, Johann Myburgh 54, Chris Rogers 48;
Imran Tahir 7-112) by 22 runs.
DIVISION TWO
Glamorgan vs Derbyshire
Chesney
Hughes's century and vital contributions from Wayne Madsen (90),
captain Billy Godleman (66 not out) and Hamish Rutherford (45) helped
Derbyshire avoid the humiliation of an innings-defeat, at the Colwyn Bay
Cricket Club ground in Wales. Following on after a lackadaisical
batting performance in the first innings, Derbyshire's revival was
triggered by Hughes's efforts.
At stumps on Day 3, Derbyshire
finished on 413 for 6 and a lead of 76 runs. The manner in which
Godleman plays on Day 4 could have a telling impact on the result.
Brief scores:
Glamorgan 518 (Aneurin Donald 234, Craig Meschede 66*, Owen Morgan 40;
Will Davis 7-146) lead Derbyshire 177 (Harvey Hosein 27, Hamish
Rutherford 26; Craig Meschede 3-33, Andrew Salter 2-15) & 78/1
(Hamish Rutherford 32*; Owen Morgan 1-9) by 263 runs.
Kent vs Sussex
Ross
Taylor fine-tuned his skills and showcased his temperament of being a
fine Test batsman as he scored an unbeaten 142 in extremely hot
conditions at the Neville Ground in Tunbridge Wells against Kent on Day
3. His effort, and that of Luke Wright's (60), were however, eclipsed by
Kagiso Rabada's excellent spell of bowling on a wicket that offered
nothing for the pacers. The South African picked three wickets,
including that of the two half-centurions Wright and Chris Nash (55),
while Michael Claydon and James Treadwell picked two wickets each.
Despite
Taylor's efforts, Sussex were bundled out for 333, and could be asked
to bat again on the final day if Kent decide to enforce follow-on.
Brief scores:
Kent 575 (Sam Northeast 190, Darren Stevens 63, Alex Blake 61; Danny
Briggs 5-169) lead Sussex 333 (Ross Taylor 142*, Luke Wright 60, Chris
Nash 55; Kagiso Rabada 3-81) by 242 runs.
